The Internet is getting faster.
In fact, the average Internet connection speeds are getting faster than they have in decades.
That’s because of a lot of work being done by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and other government agencies, which are taking a hard look at the way the Internet works and determining what it is that people want and need on the Internet.
In addition to the FCC, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has been tasked with creating the new policy framework to govern the future of the Internet, which will be updated every two years to reflect what people want.
So, the future looks a lot like the past.
But the way people want it differs from the past and the FCC is still figuring out what to do about it.
That will likely be a big challenge in the years ahead.
“It’s a big question mark,” said Greg Zuckerman, a policy analyst at the Cato Institute.
Zuckierman said the FCC has already taken steps to address the challenges posed by broadband, including requiring broadband providers to offer faster service than they can deliver, and improving broadband deployment to meet people’s needs.
But Zuck’s assessment is somewhat different from the one that many Internet experts had predicted a year ago.
“The reality is that the Internet’s already gotten a lot faster than anyone expected, so what we really need to look at is what the Internet will look like in five or 10 years,” Zuckerman said.
The Future of the Future In the meantime, many Internet users are not going to get the service they want, Zuck said.
They’ll likely have to settle for an internet service that is less than ideal, which means they may not have as much choice in what they want to watch, read, and download as they do now.
And the Internet may not be available to them all at once, meaning they may be forced to go to another provider to get their content.
But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
“We don’t need an Internet that is all-you-can-eat,” Zucker said.
“There are still many people who need a lot more than a few hours of their life.”
Zuck pointed out that many of these people are the same people who have the greatest need for faster access to the Internet — people with disabilities, people with limited incomes, or those who live in rural areas.
“I’m not saying we’re not going have to fix these issues,” Zank said.
But he said the solutions that have been proposed so far are too few and far between.
And while some may be frustrated that they are going to have to pay for more bandwidth or be able to use their own devices to access the internet, Zank is optimistic.
“If you can’t afford it, why would you go out and spend your time doing something you’re not good at?”
“And we’re seeing the beginning of a shift away from that model.”
